Circle of John Constable

This painting is a version of John Constable’s “Noon”, the view from West End Fields, Hampstead, towards Kilburn windmill.  The final version by Constable is now in the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.  It is on canvas, 33.2 x 52.4 cms. and is the painting from which David Lucas made his engraving in 1830.  The current opinion is that it was painted c. 1821-22 and relates to the numerous studies Constable made in Hampstead at this time.

Our painting is virtually the same size at 35 x 50 cms.  It is on its original stretcher which is marked on one long bar with an impressed stamp, a single line reading “J.Sherborn  321 Oxford Street”.  This refers to a firm of artist’s suppliers who traded under this name and at this address from 1820 to 1842 at the latest.
